Homelessness Inside Out
Understand Homelessness From the Inside Out
Most homelessness training explains what homelessness is. Homelessness Inside Out helps you understand what can happen to a human being long before homelessness becomes the part everybody else can see.
If you work in housing, homelessness, healthcare, social care, education, the charity sector or another frontline service, you will probably have supported people who appear angry, disengaged, chaotic, mistrustful or unwilling to accept help. The danger comes when we respond only to the behaviour in front of us without understanding the trauma, rejection, fear, exploitation, addiction, instability and repeated system failures that may be sitting underneath it.
I know that reality because I have lived it. I spent years around homelessness, addiction and services, experiencing what it feels like to become a case number, a problem to manage or somebody society walks past. Years later, I walked into Parliament carrying that lived experience into conversations about homelessness and change.
“Before we can change homelessness, we must first change how we see it.”
That is why I created Homelessness Inside Out. This is not another downloadable PDF filled with information you could find through a Google search. It is an interactive homelessness learning experience designed to take you beyond statistics and policy language and into the human reality behind homelessness.
What Will You Take Away?
See Beyond the Behaviour
Understand how trauma, childhood experiences, care, domestic abuse, exploitation, mental health, addiction and repeated rejection can influence the way somebody responds to services, professionals and offers of support.
Challenge the Assumptions That Shape Practice
Explore common beliefs around rough sleeping, begging, addiction, choice and engagement, while considering what may actually be happening underneath the behaviour you see.
Strengthen Trauma Informed Responses
Develop a deeper understanding of why safety, trust, consistency, dignity, choice and human relationships matter when supporting people who have experienced repeated trauma.
Turn Learning Into Action
Work through eight interactive chapters, lived experience insights, realistic scenarios, guided reflections and practical activities designed to help you consider what you can do differently in your own role, organisation or community.
You will explore hidden homelessness, youth homelessness, women experiencing homelessness, trauma and mental health, system failures, exploitation, addiction, relational support and the practical changes that can create better experiences for people accessing services.
The outcome I want is bigger than simply giving you more information. I want you to finish Homelessness Inside Out noticing the person who can so easily disappear behind the label, questioning assumptions you may not have realised you carried and understanding why somebody who desperately needs help may still struggle to trust the person offering it.
“People don’t heal in systems. They heal in relationships.”
Policies matter. Housing matters. Funding matters. Professional boundaries matter. But people also need to feel safe, heard and treated with dignity. We can meet every target on a spreadsheet while the human being sitting opposite us still feels invisible.
