An Interactive Lived Experience Guide

Homelessness Inside Out

Step beyond assumptions and understand homelessness through the eyes of someone who has lived it, survived it and transformed that experience into a purpose for change.

See the person behind the homelessness

Homelessness is often discussed through numbers, policies and labels, but behind every statistic is a human being with a story. There was a time when I slept rough across Westminster, begged outside banks and carried years of trauma that people passing me on the street could not see. They saw addiction, behaviour and homelessness, but few stopped to consider the childhood abuse, care placements, rejection, violence and system failures that had brought me to that pavement.

Eighteen years later, I have spoken in Parliament, worked alongside homelessness organisations and contributed to wider conversations that helped lead to the repeal of the Vagrancy Act. I created Homelessness Inside Out because lived experience belongs at the heart of how homelessness is understood, discussed and addressed.

This is more than an ebook. It is an interactive learning experience designed to challenge stereotypes, deepen understanding and help transform compassion into meaningful action.

Across eight immersive chapters, you will explore the visible and hidden realities of homelessness, including youth homelessness, women’s experiences, trauma, mental health, addiction, exploitation and the ways systems can fail people when they are most vulnerable. You will encounter real life scenarios that ask you to consider what you might do when none of the available choices feels safe.

Guided reflections allow you to pause and examine your own assumptions without judgement. Your responses save privately within your browser, helping you build a personal journal as you progress. At the end, you can download or print your reflections and create a practical commitment to change within your profession, organisation or community.

Eight Interactive Chapters Explore homelessness through lived experience, learning and reflection.
Real Life Scenarios Understand the pressures and limited choices people may face.
Private Reflections Record your thoughts and return to your learning at your own pace.
Practical Action Planning Turn greater awareness into compassionate and informed action.

This learning experience is suitable for housing professionals, social care and healthcare teams, teachers, students, youth workers, charities, volunteers, faith communities and anyone who wants to understand homelessness more deeply. It does not ask you to feel guilty. It asks you to look again, listen more closely and recognise the humanity that labels can hide.

Once you begin to understand what may be happening beneath the surface, it becomes possible to respond with dignity rather than judgement. Sometimes changing one perspective is the first step towards changing a life.
